OAS AND PERU SIGN AGREEMENT FOR ELECTORAL OBSERVATION MISSION

The government of Peru and the Organization of American States today signed an agreement under which the OAS will send an electoral observation mission to cover the process leading up to that country's presidential elections on April 8.

Ambassador to the OAS Manuel Rodríguez Cuadros signed for Peru, with Secretary General César Gaviria signing for the Organization. Plans were also disclosed for the Chief of the Electoral Observation Mission, Eduardo Stein, and Deputy Chief Diego Paz to visit Peru from February 5 to 10. They will be accompanied by Elizabeth Spehar, Executive Coordinator of the OAS Unit for the Promotion of Democracy.

They will meet with senior government and electoral officials as well as representatives from other institutions to pave the way for the election observers to begin their work at month’s end.

The team of some 50 observers will cover the Peruvian elections from several bases across the country. The election monitors are experts in various areas of election observation, including training, administration and information management.

Peru's National Elections Council will sign an agreement with the OAS on February 6, covering the procedures that the Electoral Observation Mission will follow.
