EQUATORIAL GUINEA, TURKEY, ADD TO EL SALVADOR RELIEF AID

Equatorial Guinea and Turkey are the latest nations to answer the Organization of American States appeal for aid for the people of El Salvador where a massive earthquake struck last January 13.

Ambassador Teodoro Biyogo Nsué, Equatorial Guinea's Ambassador to Washington and Permanent Observer to the OAS, presented Salvadorean Ambassador to the OAS Margarita Escobar with a $100,000 contribution on behalf of his African nation of just under 500,000. He stressed that Equatorial Guinea, Africa's only Spanish-speaking country, has "the same cultural ties" and thus a special bond and solidarity with Latin America. OAS Secretary General César Gaviria was also on hand for the presentation.

The West African diplomat, who is accredited to all of Latin America and the Caribbean, said that he would be visiting the Central American country on February 13.

At another ceremony, Turkey's Ambassador to Washington, Baki Iklin, presented OAS Assistant Secretary General Luigi Einaudi with a $9,000 donation for El Salvador. The assistance will be channeled through the Organization's Unit of Sustainable Development and Environment to support reconstruction of schools in El Salvador. The Salvadorean Ambassador and senior officials of the Sustainable Development Unit were also present.

These contributions are in addition to the more than $15 million already mobilized for the relief efforts in the earthquake-ravaged Central American country.
