OAS ELECTION OBSERVER MISSION DECLARES
GUATEMALA ELECTIONS "TRANSPARENT"

The Head of the Organization of American States’ (OAS) Election Observer Mission Edgardo Reis reports that "…voting (in Sunday’s elections in Guatemala) proceeded without incident…"

In addition to their presence at polling booths across the country, OAS election monitors also conducted their own "parallel tabulation" using statistical tools. The results allowed them to confirm that the process used to count and add the partial results reflected "the popular will expressed at each polling station that operated across the country."

The hemispheric organization’s team of 78 international observers covered all 22 of the country’s administrative departments on Election Day. Observers report that "the Mission received no complaints about anything that could have affected the normal voting process."

The OAS team observed the Guatemalan elections at the invitation of Guatemala’s Electoral Tribunal and the Guatemalan Government.
