BARBADIAN IS ELECTED UNANIMOUSLY TO
HEMISPHERIC HUMAN RIGHTS BODY

Retired Barbadian diplomat Peter Laurie was confirmed on Wednesday as the newest member of the Washington-based Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).

The Organization of American States (OAS) member country ambassadors elected Dr. Laurie by acclamation to be an IACHR commissioner. He will fill the vacancy that arose when Barbadian commissioner Sir Henry Forde resigned last September 17 from hemispheric human rights agency, which is a specialized body of the OAS.

Laurie’s was the sole nomination received after the OAS Secretary General advised member states of the vacancy. Sir Henry’s four-year term on the Commission would have expired on December 31, 2001.

Sir Courtney Blackman, Chairman of the Permanent Council and also Barbados’ Ambassador and Permanent Representative at the OAS, chaired the regular Permanent Council session at which Laurie’s unanimous election took place. The ambassador thanked the Council for electing the Barbadian diplomat, describing him as a most distinguished foreign affairs official that had served Barbados very well.
