MEXICO CONTRIBUTES TO FUND FOR SPECIAL OAS MISSION TO PERU

The Mexican government today presented the Organization of American States with a US$10,000 contribution towards its Specific Voluntary Fund in Support of the High-Level Mission to Peru, established last October 11.

During a ceremony at the Organization's headquarters, Mexico's Permanent Representative to the OAS, Claude Heller, commented on the "crucial developments" unfolding in Peru, noting that what the Secretary General and the President of the [last Regular] General Assembly session had been asked to do has proven vital in bringing Peru's political and other sectors into dialogue, while respecting the principle of non-intervention. "This is a token of our commitment to the Organization's goals and we are confident this Mission will successfully address the issues Peruvians themselves have raised," he added.

Grateful for the donation, OAS Assistant Secretary General Luigi Einaudi said the Mexican gift (the first being received for the Special Fund) together with earlier contributions by the United States and Canada to the Special Fund for Democracy "are tangible expressions of a spirit of solidarity spurring states to establish for this Hemisphere a system of liberties and rights based on effective representative democracy and due regard for the principle of non-intervention."

The OAS Permanent Council had given approval on October 11 for establishment of a Specific Voluntary Fund in Support of the High-Level Mission to provide the Mission's Secretariat in Lima with the human and logistical resources and infrastructure needed to carry out its mandate. The Council also invited contributions from all member and permanent observer countries, multilateral institutions and other potential donors, to the special fund--which is administered by the OAS General Secretariat.
