PRESS RELEASE ON THE RESIGNATION ANNOUNCEMENT OF PERUVIAN PRESIDENT ALBERTO FUJIMORI

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Cesar Gaviria, informed of the press release issued by the President of Peru, Alberto Fujimori, formally announcing his resignation to the presidency within the next 48 hours, calls on the political and social forces and on all citizens, in the face of a complex legal and political situation, to remain calm and vigilant, and to express their support for democratic institutions and constitutional order.

The Secretary General would also like to underline the convenience of preserving the spirit of dialogue and compromise, which through the OAS talks has proven to be the best instrument in dealing with the goals of preserving democracy and reinstating the full rule of law.

The OAS reiterates its commitment to support the people and institutions of Peru, and hopes that in this difficult situation, the Armed Forces will maintain an irrevocable will to support peruvian democracy and to serve as guarantors of the Constitution.  This would substantially help ensure the normal transition of presidential powers and the inauguration of the president to be elected by democratic vote in the elections of April 8, 2001.
