DECLARATION BY THE CHAIR OF THE PERMANENT COUNCIL
ON THE SITUATION IN HAITI 

Pursuant to the mandate from the meeting, I declare that the Permanent Council has taken note of the information presented by the General Secretariat through the Executive Coordinator of the Unit for the Promotion of Democracy, Ms. Elizabeth Spehar, on the status of the electoral process in Haiti and of the comments and concerns expressed thereon by the distinguished representatives, in particular regarding the appeal to the Government of Haiti to set a timely date for elections in order to comply with the constitutional deadlines.

Likewise, it takes note of the information presented by the Government of Haiti through its distinguished representative in the Permanent Council, in particular its readiness to take measures to ensure the normalcy and timeliness of the electoral process.

Lastly, it requests the Secretary General of the Organization to use his good offices with the Haitian authorities to ensure a prompt response to the concerns expressed and to report to the Permanent Council on the results of his efforts.
