STATEMENT OF THE SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE OAS

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Cesar Gaviria, expressed his concern about the calculation of the percentages for the recent Haitian senatorial elections, released by the Provisional Electoral Council in Haiti on June 19. According to the OAS Electoral Mission, these calculations do not follow either the provisions of the Constitution of Haiti nor the Electoral Law, which was expressly drawn up to cover these elections.

The Secretary General considers it vital for the consolidation of democracy in Haiti, one of the founding members of the Organization of American States, that the will of the people be accurately reflected in the final results published by the Electoral Council.
