OAS SECRETARY GENERAL TO LEAD MISSION TO HAITI

Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General Cesar Gaviria today announced that he will lead the mission to Haiti from August 17 to 19, in accordance with the OAS resolution passed August 4.

The Secretary General will be accompanied by the OAS Assistant Secretary General Luigi R. Einaudi, by theAmbassadors and Permanent Representatives to the OAS of Argentina (Juan José Arcuri), Chile (Esteban Tomic), and Venezuela (Virginia Contreras), and by the Assistant Secretary General, Foreign and Community Relations of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat (Albert Ramdin).

The mandate of the Mission is to identify, together with the Government of Haiti and other sectors of the political community and civil society, options and recommendations for resolving, as expeditiously as possible, difficulties such as those that have arisen from different interpretations of the electoral law, and for further strengthening democracy in that country.

The Mission will report to the Permanent Council on developments and results of its efforts.
