SECRETARY GENERAL JOINS OAS SPECIAL MISSION IN PERU

Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General César Gaviria left Washington today for Lima, Peru, to join the Secretary of the OAS' Special Mission, Dominican Republic Foreign Minister Eduardo Latorre, and the other Mission members already in the Peruvian capital to continue efforts to facilitate dialogue among Peruvians.

On Wednesday, the OAS Special Mission will meet with President Alberto Fujimori, Public Defender Jorge Santistevan and representatives of the opposition. The OAS Mission will present to their interlocutors a work plan designed to promote dialogue and a timetable for the 29-point proposal introduced by the OAS Special Mission last June.

The role of the Special Mission is to facilitate dialogue involving various segments of the Peruvian society and government, monitor the strengthening of Peru's democratic institutions and implement the recommendations made by a Special Mission which visited Peru last June 28 to 29. The government and various segments of the Peruvian society accepted those recommendations.
