The following letter was sent this past April 13 by Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) César Gaviria to Ambassador Kong-Koo Lee, the Permanent Observer of the Republic of Korea to the OAS:

"I am writing to express my full-fledged support to the upcoming Summit between the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to be held in Pyongyang from June 12-14, 2000. In particular, I would like to congratulate President Kim Dae-jung for his efforts to advance international peace and security and for his commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes.

"This historic event will not only serve to strengthen cooperation and understanding between the two countries, but will also encourage other countries of the world to engage in dialogue and support confidence-building measures in order to secure a peaceful coexistence with our sister nations.

"The Organization of American States has a long tradition in advancing programs and activities aimed at reconciliation. In this sense, I am also pleased to offer our support by sharing our experiences in this area with you and your Government.

"I look forward to working together to ensure peace and prosperity for both our peoples."
