HAITIAN PRESIDENT VISITS OAS

Haitian President René Preval and Mme. Géri Benoît-Preval will visit the OAS in Washington today to meet with Assistant Secretary General Christopher Thomas, Permanent Council President Ambassador James Murphy of Belize, and senior OAS officials and inaugurate an art exhibition.

President Preval’s visit takes place as Haiti prepares for the March 19 legislative, municipal and local government elections that will be monitored by an OAS observation team.

The Haitian First Lady and Ambassador Thomas will inaugurate an art exhibition entitled Journey Towards Freedom, in the OAS’ Art Gallery at 6:00 p.m. The display was organized as part of a program for Haiti 2000: Road towards 2004. The latter year marks the 200th anniversary of Haiti’s independence.

OAS member state Ambassadors will be among special guests on hand to greet the Haitian dignitaries after the opening of the exhibit, which closes on Thursday, February 10.
