  ST. VINCENT AND GRENADINES COMMEMORATIVE
POSTAGE STAMPS PRESENTED TO OAS CHIEF

December 17, 1998

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), César Gaviria, was today presented with a set of postage stamps issued by St. Vincent and the Grenadines to mark the 50th anniversary of the Washington-based hemispheric body.

Ambassador Kingsley Layne, Permanent Representative of St. Vincent and the Grenadines to the OAS, presented the package of 300 stamps during a courtesy call by the OAS chief at the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Embassy in Washington this afternoon. The ambassador explained that the proceeds from the stamps of the OAS golden anniversary this year were to be used as part of that country’s contribution towards relief efforts for the Central American countries battered by Hurricane Mitch recently.

The OAS Secretary General also had individual courtesy visits with Ambassador Lionel Hurst of Antigua and Barbuda, Ambassador Sonia Johnny of Saint Lucia, and Ambassador Osbert Liburd of St. Kitts and Nevis. During the visits, the secretary general and the ambassadors touched on matters related to the involvement of the countries in the Organization.

These countries’ Permanent Missions to the OAS and Embassies are housed in the same building in Washington.
