OAS HEAD TO VISIT BAHAMAS

October 2, 1998

Relations between The Bahamas and the Organization of American States (OAS) will be top of the agenda when the OAS secretary general, Mr. César Gaviria, visits Nassua beginning on Sunday October 4, for two days of consultations with senior Bahamas government officials.

OAS technical cooperation arrangements with The Bahamas, the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) process and the Summit of the Americas will be the focus of the discussions with the head of the hemispheric organization.

During his visit, the OAS secretary general will also pay courtesy calls on the governor general, the prime minister, the foreign minister and the leader of the opposition.

A former president of Colombia (1990-1994), Mr. Gaviria was elected to head the Washington-headquartered OAS in 1994. His long and distinguished career has established him as a pre-eminent conflict mediator, human rights advocate, promoter of regional integration and defender of democracy in the Americas.
