OAS RESPONDS TO FLOODS IN HAITI

The Organization of American States today made a $20,000 contribution to help with recovery efforts after deadly floods lashed Haiti this past week, killing more than 20 people. The donation was made from the Organization's Inter-American Emergency Aid Fund (FONDEM).

Presenting the check, OAS Assistant Secretary General, Ambassador Luigi Einaudi, said the amount was small but symbolized the Organization's solidarity with the people of Haiti. He noted that Haiti is a founding OAS member and that the OAS is actively working to help resolve problems stemming from the May 21, 2000 elections.

Ambassador Raymond Valcin accepted on his government's behalf, thanking the OAS. He said the government and people of Haiti accept this contribution as "a huge expression of the OAS' commitment to continue supporting the Haitian people in strengthening the democratic process in that country." Ambassador Valcin said "There is no price for such support," particularly at a time of suffering.
