CHILE RATIFIES TREATY TO ELIMINATE DISCRIMINATION
AGAINST THOSE WITH DISABILITIES

The government of Chile today once more underscored its strong commitment to defending and promoting human rights and, in particular, the rights of the most vulnerable groups in society.

During a ceremony at the Organization of American States in Washington, Chile's Ambassador Esteban Tomic deposited with Secretary General César Gaviria the instrument of ratification of the Inter-American Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities.  The OAS treaty was adopted in Guatemala City in June 1999.

Chile has now joined Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Peru and Uruguay in ratifying the hemispheric treaty that entered into force on September 14, 2001.

Besides preventing and eliminating all forms of discrimination against individuals with disabilities, the Convention is also intended to facilitate the full incorporation of disabled persons into society through legislative, social, educational, labor or other measures.
