BRAZILIAN ENVOY ELECTED TO CHAIR OAS JURIDICAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE

Brazil's Ambassador to the Organization of American States, Valter Pecly Moreira, was today unanimously elected as the new Chairman of the Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs, succeeding Argentina's Ambassador Raśl Ricardes.

In his acceptance remarks, the Brazilian diplomat said he took the responsibility as deference to his country.  "Let me say I am very proud to represent a government that accords the highest priority to the issues we consider in this Committee," he added.

He thanked the Ambassadors who nominated him for their kind words, and thanked the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI) and Central American Group (GRUCA) Ambassadors, adding that as he assumed the post, he was "sensitive to the responsibility involved in the work that lies ahead."  The Committee on Juridical and Political Affairs has a very broad, complex and important agenda, he noted.   "And I pledge to do all that I and my delegation can to ensure that we go to [the General Assembly in] Barbados having accomplished our mission."

The Argentinian Ambassador formally nominated Pecly Moreira, pointing to the Brazilian diplomat's well-recognized capability for diplomatic work, "and in particular, his negotiating skills and vast experience."
