OAS SECRETARY GENERAL TO VISIT HAITI

Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), C�sar Gaviria, announced today he will be traveling to Haiti on Sunday June 24, 2001 to accompany efforts to establish a “credible, independent and neutral” Provisional Electoral Council. Gaviria’s visit is in keeping with OAS General Assembly resolution, “Support for Democracy in Haiti,” approved at the 31st Regular Session of the General Assembly in San Jose, Costa Rica on June 5.

The Secretary General will be accompanied by the Assistant Secretaries General of the OAS and of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) as well as by Ambassador Sergio Romero of Mexico, the newly appointed Special Representative of the Secretary General in Haiti.
