OAS SECRETARY GENERAL TO APPOINT SPECIAL
REPRESENTATIVE IN HAITI

Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), César Gaviria, announced today his intention to appoint Ambassador Sergio Romero Cuevas, of Mexico, as his Special Representative in Haiti.

A career diplomat with the Mexican Secretariat of Foreign Affairs, Sergio Romero has served as his country’s Ambassador to Haiti, Nicaragua, and Paraguay.

Fluent in French and English as well as in Spanish, Ambassador Romero will be responsible for overseeing the totality of the OAS’ engagement in that country.

Mr. Romero will serve simultaneously as Director of the Office of the General Secretariat of the OAS in Haiti. In this latter capacity, he will succeed Ambassador Denneth Modeste of Grenada, who has served as Director of the OAS Office there since 1995 and who has been re-assigned to OAS General Secretariat Headquarters as an Advisor to the Assistant Secretary General.

 

Mr. Romero’s appointment will be effective from July 1, 2001.
