NOTE FROM THE PERMANENT MISSION OF MEXICO REQUESTING
THE CONVOCATION OF THE MEETING OF CONSULTATION OF MINISTERS
OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, PURSUANT TO ARTICLE 61
OF THE OAS CHARTER

This document is being distributed to the permanent missions and
will be presented to the Permanent Council of the Organization.

PERMANENT MISSION OF MEXICO

OEA-00513

Washington, D.C.
September 15, 2001

Excellency:

The insidious attacks perpetrated on September 11, 2001, on the cities of New York and Washington, D.C., and on the state of Pennsylvania in the United States of America require the Organization of American States and all its members to respond with a show of solidarity and commitment vis-ŕ-vis the people and the Government of the United States in a manner consistent with the measures adopted by the United Nations.

To that end, the Government of Mexico requests, in accordance with Article 62 of the OAS Charter, the convocation of the Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, as set forth in Article 61 of the Charter, to be held with all due urgency at the headquarters of the Organization.

I would be grateful if, at the special session of the Permanent Council on Wednesday, September 19, at 10:30 a.m., this request could be included on the order of business as a matter of priority so that we may take a decision on it and so that the agenda and rules of procedure for the meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs may be set pursuant to Article 63 of the OAS Charter. I would also appreciate it if this note could be distributed in advance as an official document of the Permanent Council.

Accept, Excellency, the renewed assurances of my highest consideration.

Alternate Representative
Ernesto Campos Tenorio
Chargé d’Affaires ad interim

Ambassador Hernán Castro
Chair of the Permanent Council of the
Organization of American States and
Permanent Representative of Costa Rica
to the OAS
