7% of global GDP is generated by cultural industries. According to diverse studies, in Latin America and the Caribbean, these figures take different values; between 6.7% in Mexico and 2% in Colombia where it outperforms the contribution of other traditional national industries such as coffee production and processing. Additionally, the region needs to create new and better labor opportunities that result in the improvement of life standards and the well being of peoples from all over the Americas. That is why the Organization of American States in collaboration with the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB) and the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) organized the International Workshop: “Culture as an Engine of Economic Growth and Social Inclusion in the Americas” on October 1 – 2, 2007 at the OAS Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
