Washington, DC provides unparalleled access to government organizations, associations and experts to address the latest industry developments. The mission of the Latin American Film Conference (LAFC) is to organize a yearly conference/market that focuses on Latin American Cinema, the development of the audio-visual sector in the respective countries and the distribution of their work around the world.

The Latin American Film Conference will be launched this year in conjunction with the 7th Annual Latin American Film Festival organized by the Organization of American States (OAS), in association with the American Film Institute and the Association of Ibero-American Cultural Attachés. For three days in September, LAFC will organize a:

Conference: A series of seminars and panels will be presented offering the latest information and exciting discussion with leading industry experts where filmmakers and the production community can meet. (For further details on the conference seminars and panels, see reverse)

Film Market: A video library of all the films in the festival will be available at viewing stations professionals of the film industry. These monitors will be available on a first-come, first serve basis.

Tradeshow: Exhibition booths will be set up to showcase the audio-visual sector of various Latin American countries, highlighting the film industries of: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Venezuela and others. Available information will include: videos out their industry, brochures on national industry related services, brochures on tourism, and the contact person/ information for the various national film industry representatives. Embassies, industry and non-industry companies will be able to also present their latest services, equipment, and technology to tradeshow attendees.

  • Market film participation: $300 per film

  • Tradeshow: $2000 per exhibition booth (limited space available)

  • Conference: $175 for 3-day conference/ $100 per day (discounts for students)

Wednesday, September 22, 2004 (Focus on the role of Government in the film industry)

10:00am – 2:00pm – Roundtable on The Role of Government & the Private Sector in the audiovisual sector**: A focus on the film & television industry as an engine for economic growth, employment and development in Latin America. Reports and discussion on the status of film production in key countries; Co-production incentives and agreements, relevant legislation, government film industry agencies, position of US majors, international trends; data on co-productions in Latin America. Panelists to be invited will include: International organizations such as the Film Agencies & Commissions from Argentina (INCAA), Brazil (ANCINE), Chile (Plataforma Audiovisual), Colombia (Min.of Culture), Mexico (IMCINE), Venezuela (CNAC), US (MPA), Canada, Ibermedia, France (Fonds Sud), Inter-American Development Bank, World Bank, OAS, UNESCO, etc.

11:30am – 2:30pm – Press Conference: Meet the Festival filmmakers (Organized by the OAS)

3:00pm – 6:00pm Site Visit to industry facility – Discovery** (Limited Space)

6:30pm – Informal Meeting of OAS filmmakers at the Mexican Cultural Institute

Thursday, September 23, 2004 (The Business of Film)

9:00am to 10:00am: Networking

10:00am to Noon – Financing (Grants, subsidies, distributors) – Meet the organizations (PBS Latino, Focus Features, Ford Foundation) and Government Organizations (European- Ibermedia, Fonds Sud, Latin American–INCAA, ANCINE, IMCINE, etc) that finance films.

12:30pm – 2:00pm –Distribution/ The international marketplace for Latin American Films – Meet the exhibitors, distributors that distribute Latin American films; including Landmark, Fox Home Video, HBO Latino, Venevision.

2:30pm– 4:00pm: Marketing and Festival Strategy of Latin American Films in the US & Abroad – Learn the marketing techniques used by American distributors in the United States and the festival strategy that distributors follow in order to pick up films. Moderator: Max Alvarez, Film Historian

7:00pm: Opening night Reception**

Friday, September 24, 2004 (Creative and Technical Developments)

9:00am to 10:00am: Networking

10:00am to Noon – Seminar on how to use the latest script writing & budgeting tools: Learn how to go from idea to synopsis, treatment to script using the latest software. Also learn how to pitch your stories to distributors.

12:30pm – 2:00pm – Technical Demonstrations: – Learn about the newest video cameras and other production and post-production systems, softwares, and services with demonstrations. Including: Kodak, Avid Express, Final Cut Pro, cost of 35mm vs. video (HD, Digi-Beta, etc)

2:30pm – 4:00pm: Legal and Financial Clinic: A panel of Legal (music, copyright, etc), financial, production, post-production experts answer specific questions from the audience.
