DEPARTMENT OF REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENT

The Department of Regional Development and Environment conducts technical cooperation and training programs to assist the member States in their efforts to preserve their natural resources. It works with the countries on planning sustainable development, managing the environment and preparing investment programs and projects.

During the period covered in this report, the technical cooperation totalled $8 million. Some 54% came from the Organization's technical cooperation funds, while the remaining 46% came from other sources, international organizations and institutions that provide technical cooperation and financing, and donor countries.

The Department has provided cooperation to the countries in the following areas:

• Watershed and Border Area Development
• Preparation of National Environmental Action Plans
• Management of National Parks, Ecological Preserves and Other Conservation Areas
• Natural Hazard Management
• Organizing Information on Natural Resources and Environmental Conditions
• Training and Environmental Management
• Development of Strategies and Policies for Sustainable Tourism Development
• Development of Sustainable Tourism Development Plans and Projects
• Support for Cooperation in Tourism and for Integration Systems
