OAS/NIST Project on Metrology and Standardization

The OAS has helped to establish and reinforce national metrological laboratories and has helped create the Inter-American Metrology System (SIM). To continue this work, the Government of the United States provided an additional special contribution to set up a cooperation program between the region's metrological institutions and the NIST. The project seeks to build up the inter-American metrology system and to create an institutional network that promotes inter-American trade, quality and reliability in the products of the region, technical support to solve legal problems and horizontal cooperation between metrological institutions and businesses in the region. A number of regional activities have been organized, such as the First International Workshop on Managing Calibration and Testing Laboratories, the International Workshop on Metrology, Quality, Competitiveness and Industrial Modernization, and a National Course on Flow Measurement for the Petroleum Industry. Stipends have been granted to enable individuals to take part in world meetings on this subject. Also, joint OAS/NIST missions have been conducted to five countries.
