This area of activity is intended to develop geographic information systems (GIS) as tools for evaluating and monitoring the use of natural resources and natural hazards. These systems can be used to work up development strategies and investment projects, and can also be an important factor in map making (cartography).
In Panama, as part of the technical cooperation activities being conducted under the La Amistad Project (OAS-UNEP-COSTA RICA-PANAMA) a number of workshops were conducted to provide instruction in geographic information systems, to professionals from the National Institute of Renewable Natural Resources.
In Costa Rica, at the request of the Office of the Energy Director and as part of the activities being conducted in mastering techniques for reducing the energy infrastructure's exposure to natural hazards, a workshop was held with private sector participation.
In Central America, as part of the activities being conducted in cooperation with the Inter-American Regional Development Center (CINDER), an inter-American seminar-workshop on the methodology of territorial organization was held in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The experiences of a number of countries in South America, the Isthmus and Mexico were presented.
