The Inter-American Statistical Training Center (CIENES) conducted 15 inter-American and subregional courses and seminars, attended by 326 participants from 20 member States. With contributions provided through horizontal cooperation, 6 internships were done in 5 countries to set up the technical activities of the Social and Poverty Indicators System (SISPO) for the Central American Isthmus. As part of the Applied Research Program, 14 papers were prepared on issues related to CIES' priority areas.
Under the project on Statistical Analysis and Service and Data Processing, the following was accomplished: a) Statistical data were obtained, prepared and stored for the data bank; b) Statistical information was analyzed and then disseminated through the regular issues of the "Boletín Estadístico de la OEA" and the "Boletín Trimestral de Precios Internacionales de Productos Básicos"; c) Statistical data was supplied to internal offices and outside users; and d) support was provided to carry out the activities of CIENES, the Inter-American Statistical Conference and the Inter-American Statistical Institute.
The Economic and Social Analysis Project has assisted the Organization's deliberative bodies and their working groups by preparing informative, statistical and technical documents and by supplying technical secretariat services. It has also taken part in technical seminars and has responded to several outside requests for economic information on the region. It participated in the OAS/IDB/ECLAC Tripartite Group that prepared the documents titled "Toward Free Trade in the Western Hemisphere" and "The Fight against Poverty on the Hemispheric Agenda" for the Summit of the Americas. A book was published titled Democracia y Salud: En los Parlamentos de América Latina y el Caribe. That book is the product of the Democracy and Health project being carried out in conjunction with the Pan American Health Organization.
