LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN INTEGRATION


In October, the Inter-American Seminar on Transportation Infrastructure as a Factor in Integration was held at headquarters. In attendance were high-level specialists from the region, who examined the demands created by the integration movements and the significant increases in trade.

It was agreed that support would be provided for a MERCOSUR project to circulate information in the United States. A seminar on this same topic will be held in cooperation with the IDB.

A seminar was held with PAHO on analysis of the fiscal budget law (health sector) for parliamentarians from the Andean Group. With the support of the Group of Three, a seminar was conducted for the Caribbean countries on the most efficient allocation of public funds.

At the Miami Conference, and as a result of the Plan of Action approved at the Summit of the Americas, the OAS participated in a plenary session and in a meeting for programming activities in 1995 for the countries of the Caribbean and Central America. There, the decision was to prepare a joint proposal for both regions, which will then be introduced at the Third Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Caribbean and Central America.

The Plurinational Project on Creating Business and Generating Employment (Latin American Module) provided technical support to the Latin American Confederation of Medium- and Small-Industries (CLAMPI) to prepare its statute, registration and protocol and a study on the role of small- and medium-size business in Latin America and the basis of a combined paper on integration and economic and trade complementation among countries in the region in the field of small- and medium-size industry. In Panama, the Central American Small Business Seminar was organized for small-scale business associations in the subregion to sign an agreement for mutual advisory assistance, technical internships, commercial exchange and business workshops, and the market-data sharing networks.
