COORDINATION AND COOPERATION WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS

Article 117.h of the Charter assigns to the General Secretariat the function of establishing "relations of cooperation, in accordance with decisions reached by the General Assembly or the Councils, with the specialized organizations, as well as other national and international organizations."

In several sections of this report, reference is made, in some detail, to the work being done in cooperation with other regional and subregional organizations of the inter-American system and of the United Nations system, and to the methods used to enhance coordination and cooperation with those organizations.

The OAS/IDB/ECLAC Group prepared two documents for the Summit of the Americas, one titled "Toward Free Trade in the Western Hemisphere" and the other titled "The Fight against Poverty on the Hemispheric Agenda".

Pursuant to mandates received from the General Assembly, preparations continue to be made for another meeting between officials of organizations in the inter-American system and those of the United Nations system, scheduled to be held before the next regular session of the General Assembly. The true potential for cooperation between the OAS and the United Nations has been realized in the International Civilian Mission in Haiti and in the coordination of humanitarian relief for that country. The General Secretariat and the United Nations called upon the international community to enlist its support for a short-term emergency program to precede the plans for Haiti's economic reconstruction.
