The Department of International Law oversees the promotion and
development of international law in accordance with the [Declaration
of Panama on the Inter-American Contribution to the Development
and Codification of International Law]. Under this
commitment, the Department develops, promotes and implements
activities relating to the teaching, study and advancement of
international law as a follow-up to the [Inter-American
Program for the Development of International Law].
▪ Courses on International Law
The Course on International Law is an event organized
annually since 1973 by the [Inter-American Juridical
Committee] and the Secretariat for Legal Affairs (SLA)
of the Organization of American States. The length of this
Course is four weeks and takes place in the city of Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, every August.
The Course on International Law has a
different main topic every year and constitutes an
opportunity to promote the exchange of ideas and to generate
an open dialogue about issues of particular relevance in the

International Law
The Workshops on International Law organized by the General
Secretariat of the Organization of American States are part
of the mandates required by the Declaration of Panama on the
Inter-American Contribution to the Development and
Codification of International Law and the Inter-American
Program for the Development of International Law.
