Follow-up to the Summits of the Americas

CIM continues to carry out the mandates emanating from the Summits of the Americas.  Among the actions and projects undertaken in fulfillment of these mandates are:

1) Continued work with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, especially in the implementation of recommendations on gender presented to the Ministers of Justice and Attorneys General, as well as on violence against women;

2) Implementation of the Inter-American Program on Women’s Human Rights and Gender Equity and Equality:  Mainstreaming gender in Ministerial-level meetings (SEPIA III, Gender and Education) and follow up of SEPIA I, Gender and Labor and SEPIA II, Gender and Justice.

3) Gender Training within the OAS for program and policy staff;

4) Continued work on the research on violence against women and the trafficking of women and children for sexual exploitation, and implementation of recommendations emanating from both projects.

During 2003, the CIM collaborated with the Secretariat for the Summit Process and the missions of the Member States to ensure the integration of gender in the Special Summit of the Americas, held in Monterrey, Mexico in January 2004.  The ensuing Declaration of Nuevo Leon addresses the issue of the empowerment of women, their full and equal participation in the development of our societies, and their equal opportunities to exercise leadership as a way of reducing of poverty, promoting economic and social prosperity, and people-centered sustainable development and expresses the member state’s commitment to continue promoting gender equality and equity.  The Declaration also expresses the will of the member States to cooperate in the fight against trafficking in persons, which especially affects women and children.
